"The Changing Face of Time"
Clock face book & desk clock
This 6-inch tall desk clock with easily changeable face designs won me a digital camera when it was voted "Best of Show" at the PALs convention in Reno several years ago.  The unfinished wooden base and snap-in clock are manufactured by Walnut Hollow and can be purchased at most craft stores.  The comb-bound "My Clock For All Seasons" booklet shown next to the clock in the photograph holds a variety of reversible clock face designs in clear pockets made from crystal clear envelopes.

Click on the thumbnail photos below for close up views of the clock and book and to view and download the full-size template for the changeable face design.

Instructions for Clock Face Designs:
  • Prepare your unfinished wooden clock base by sanding smooth (if needed) and painting it with semi-gloss white paint.  It will probably require 2 coats of paint.  Allow the paint to dry completely while you design your changeable clock faces.
  • Click on the clock face template (right) to view it full-size (a new window will open).  Right click on the full-size template graphic, select "Save As" from the window that pops up, and save the template to your computer's hard drive.

Clock Face
Template
  • Open a blank 11" x 8-1/2" page in your graphics design program.  Import the full-size face template to the blank page (you should be able to fit 3 templates on the page). Before designing your changeable clock faces, print a draft copy of the template you just imported, cut it out, and make sure it fits perfectly on the wooden clock base, with the hole for the clock properly positioned.  If it doesn't, you may need to tweek the template graphic size slightly until it's a perfect fit.
  • In order to make the clock faces reversible (2 faces for the price of one), print a second draft page of the blank templates.  Then print a second draft of the clock face templates on the reverse side of the paper to make sure everything lines up.  If it doesn't, adjust the position of the templates accordingly.   They must line up, front to back, in order to make the faces reversible.
  • Once you're sure the template fits properly and the design on the reverse side of the paper lines up perfectly with the other side, create your clock face designs, curving your text around the clock hole as shown in the photographs.   (See suggestions below for clock face text.)  Print your finished designs on smooth white cardstock.  Before printing the clock faces on the reverse side of the cardstock, be sure to delete the clock template--the template/cutting guide is only needed on one side of the cardstock.
  • Laminate your finished clock face designs with a thin heat laminant (5-7mil).  Cut out the laminated clock faces.  To attach the face design to the wooden clock, position the hole in the design over the hole in the wooden base and snap your clock into the base.
Instructions for Clock Face Storage Book:
  1. In your graphics design program, open an 11" x 8-1/2" blank design page.  Create a rectangle 4-1/4" wide x 6-1/2" tall.  Duplicate the rectangle so you have 2--one for the front cover and one for the back cover.  Create your cover design within one of the rectangles and, if desired, place your logo in the other rectangle (back cover).  On my face storage book I created a floral border on the front cover with text going around the border on the inside that reads:  For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven:  A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted.
  2. Print your finished cover designs on white cardstock, laminate front & back, and cut out each cover.  With a corner rounder punch, round the two corners of each cover opposite the edge to be comb (or spiral) bound.
  3. Cut legal-size (A10) crystal clear envelopes to 5-1/2" tall (cutting off the flap end of each envelope) so that each clock face design will extend 1/2" above the envelope opening for easy removal.  With the envelope opening at the top, reinforce the left side of each envelope (which will be comb bound) with clear cellophane tape, front and back.
  4. Using a comb binder, punch the covers & clear envelope pages and bind.  (If you don't own a binder, an office supply store like Staples or Office Max will punch and comb bind your book for about $1.00.)
  5. Insert your clock face designs in the clear pockets of your book, and you're done!
Clock Face Text Suggestions:

For the text on my clock faces, I thought it would be thematic to use sayings about "time".  Listed below are some of the clock face text that I used.   On some clock face designs it may work better to use graphics around the clock hole and place your text in the lower portion of the clock face below the snap-in clock.

  • A time for fireworks!  (July clock face)
  • Whoooo has time for cleaning?  (Using an owl graphic in the lower area)
  • I always have time for my friends!
  • Keep time to the music of life
  • Slow down!  There's lots of time!
  • It's punkin' time!  (Halloween clock face)
  • Springtime!  (April clock face)
  • Creative minds don't have time to be tidy!
  • Time for my holiday baking!
  • There's no way to make up for time you should have spent with your children (graphics around the snap-in clock, and text in lower area of face)
  • Time with my PALs warms my heart!
  • Time for a swap!
  • Mothers hold their children's hands for a short time but their hearts forever (May/Mother's Day)
  • The purrrrr-fect time of day!  (with graphic of cat)
  • A time for giving thanks (November)
  • Party Time!  (with birthday cake graphic)
  • I love naptime
  • There's no time like the present
