Grow-With-Me Rag Quilt

If you're looking for a unique, personalized baby shower gift, my Grow-With-Me Rag Quilt really fits the bill!  While it may look rather plain right now, the quilt changes, "growing" along with the baby.  By the time baby is 5 years old, each denim square will be filled with memories of his infancy.

Start by cutting 25 8-inch denim squares and 25 8-inch flannel squares.  If you know the baby's name, embroider it on one of the denim squares.  Stitch them together following the rag quilting instructions, five rows of four blocks each.  Add a top border row with a curtain rod pocket on the back so the quilt can eventually become a wall hanging.  Add a matching border to the bottom of the quilt.Rag Quilt

Each row will represent one year in the baby's life, and the blank denim squares can be embellished in two different ways as the baby grows.

New 8-inch denim squares can be embroidered and stitched right over the blank squares.  Or give a set of fabric paints with the quilt for baby's mommy to decorate blank squares as she likes.

The Grow-With-Me Rag Quilt shown here was made for my granddaughter's expectant girlfriend whose son has not yet arrived.  I've asked that she bring it back for me to update it over the next five years, so check back for new pictures!

Use your imagination for embellishing the blank squares.  Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Baby's birthplace (hospital name, city and state)
  • Birth information (baby's weight and length)
  • Baby's handprints and footprints using fabric paint
  • When baby gives up his pacifier, loop a satin ribbon through it and attach it to the corner of a block; embroider "I gave up my binky on (date)" in the square
  • Add baby's photo by iron-on transfer on a piece of high quality white fabric, then stitch it to a blank denim square on the quilt
  • When baby outgrows a favorite outfit, use that fabric as an appliqué
  • Embroider the date baby's first tooth came through along with a cute embroidered tooth
